At the age of 15, while taking art classes at the Los Angeles Music and Art School, Mel was discovered by Chicano artist Frank Gutierrez. Under Gutierrez’s tutelage, they were accepted into the Visual Art program at The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where they focused on drawing and painting. Mel went on to receive a BA, in Studio Art with a focus on Abstract Painting, from Cal Poly Humboldt.
I am an abstract artist who likes to convey the world around me in grids of shapes, color, and line. I use a limited palette that captures the feeling of the scenes or objects I’m creating. I pull my inspiration from the city scenes and murals I grew up seeing around Los Angeles and Mexico. I like how the history of unintentional and intentional graffiti, playbills, old painted signs, and advertisements overlap to create an ongoing art show of how a city and its inhabitants change.
Through layers of painted-over color, line, shadows of old images, and parts of old words: I tell my story through the eyes of all the things I saw - that came and went - growing up in the city. I want to help others express how they see the world around them and to create beauty in ways that make sense to them.
Through my own journey as an artist, I've found a voice and a sense of freedom. I feel that art is best learned through exploration. And that an element of fun is necessary for sparking the creative desire, and promoting continuous learning and growth - in any art form.
